Methods to Make Outstanding Cross Stitch Patterns

Well, your solution to wanting an “unobtrusive” edge is just the sort of thing master embroiderers do. So you’re not an idiot after all. If you dislike plain blanket stitch, you can always do a knotted edge, picot edge and any number of other decorative ways to finish. But rest assured, plain closed blanket is centuries old – and it works. One thing that makes it very nice is by making running stitches. You could put those running stitches on that pulled thread line. Also, a running stitch on the inside edge of the area to be blanket stitched. This gives a rounder appearance and ALSO helps to hold things together better. Meredith used a satin stitch.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to perform a subsequent band of blanket stitch (with the running stitches) around the first satin stitch. Maybe a tiny space between the two areas into which you could embroider a feather stitch, coral stitch, tiny herringbone. I’m trying to envision piercing the satin stitch and making some fancy buttonhole loops. Not sure it would work – and depending upon the ground, might weaken the edge. Whatever you do – the looseness of the ground (tightly or loosely woven) will determine the outcome. Do I understand that you did this diagonal stitching in a smooth run – as averse to something akin to Hardanger with little steps.

If you’re going to cut out this piece so that it is a diamond – and you want it to stay intact, you’re gonna have to bite the bullet and blanket stitch it following the diagonal – not with all stitches up/down. If you’ve done much Hardanger, you know that even THAT can be a dilemma on the edge (the plain satin stitching) and machine stitching first – or hand running stitches – are often employed. I’ve read quite a few posts on this edge dilemma (I’ve done only one small Hardanger piece). The loop of the blanket stitch holds the ground threads so that they can’t move and covers the edge at the same time. It prevents ravelling. Plain satin stitch won’t work – nor will herringbone – even closed herringbone. I’ve tried plain satin stitch for cut out sections on fine cloth. It doesn’t work. And running stitches first help stabilize it all. I’ve done this both ways – and know that it works better (the running stitches). That’s why all cutwork embroidery – of any ethnic origin that I know of – uses blanket stitch or knotted buttonhole stitch.

Explanation about Cross Stitching Expenditures

Not only has it made it possible for my husband and I, who often have extremely different tastes in viewing, to be in the same room together while the TV’s on, it’s also kept my brain from turning into Couch Mashed Potato. I need a hobby for my husband. It is quite clear to me that I would get a lot more done if only he had a hobby too. He even admits that it would be nice to have one, but nothing has “stuck” yet. It would also be MUCH easier explaining my stitching expenditures! Of course separate checkbooks are a big help. Maybe if I put the shop names in some kind of code so it would be less obvious.

I think I’m onto something here. I can change one store to “Food” He always thinks we should spend more on that! But I’m not convinced that this will keep the whole thing from fraying. The threads go horizontal and perpendicular to the page. So I want something to do around my satin stitching to edge off the piece. btw, got your package yesterday. Because I am an idiot male with limited experience, I am inclined to believe that the one stitch I learned for edging will do all edges — the blanket-stitch. (“If all ya got is a hammer…” etc.) In my case, I’m too “square” in demeanor to ever do a diamond, so I prepare the edges of the fabric rectangle by pulling a thread and cutting the fabric along the empty line so that there are no threads cut by accident at and parallel to the edge.

Of course this would not apply in the diamond case. And then… I hated the idea of noticing the blanket-stitch afterwards, so my solution was thus: I used the pulled threads of linen to do the blanket-stitching — it required pulling apart the fabric strips I had cut off, too, to get enough threads. It was necessary to give the threads a good stretch over the smooth edge of the table first, to straighten out a bit the ziggyzaggies from having been embedded in a weave. When done with those threads, the edge stitching was unobtrusive enough to suit my taste.

Embroidery Work Using Cross Stitching Techniques

I do most of my stitching on the weekends, sitting in our (tiny) enclosed balcony which I have taken over as a sort of craft room. This way I can both take advantage of the natural light and stay warm – central heating was cut off in late March but it’s still pretty chilly indoors. Once ensconced in my favorite chair with my feet up and a thermos of decaf at hand, I can, and do, stitch it for hours. Since my eyes aren’t very good and they tend to be tired after hours of staring at the computer at work, I don’t like to stitch in the evenings – though I do occasionally.

Evenings are devoted to rctn (more eyestrain!), good books, or crochet – which doesn’t require such intense concentration. I stitch on the bus on my way ot work – I have three kids and a 4th on the way (any day now!). My favorite forms of needlework are embroidery – Silk ribbon, crazy quilt establishment, embroidery on clothes, etc, and smocking. I usually do small enough projects that I can carry them in my briefcase.

Will occasionally do some needlework on breaks, always when visiting relatives, whenever there is a free few minutes! here with little ones. Mine are finally off on their own, (college, job, married) and even though I thought I’d have empty nest syndrome, I find that I can now stitch any time during the day when I feel like I’d like to sit down for a while. Of course, this is just the days that I’m not off gadding with friends or playing bridge.

Details of Royal School of Needlework

If one takes silk shading classes at the Royal School of Needlework (now located at Hampton Court) one still uses the Kensington Stitch as a painterly way to depict flowers and figures in silk. The popularity of the split stitch in silk shading was revived by turn of the century designers (Walter Crane, William Morris, May Morris, Grace Christie, et al.) who looked to the past for their aesthetic guidance. They pinched it from the Opus Anglicanum of medieval England. (see Syon Cope, Jesse Cope, etc.) The biggest push of this happening was in Victorian times when we developed the term Assisi work, Richileau work, etc.

Then in the 50s/60s when we developed the term blackwork and in America when the term needlepoint was used for canvas work rather than for needlemade lace. When one considers all of the languages stitchers use, one needs to have descriptions of the technique to gain a common ground. I was unaware that Kensington stitch was also used as a name for split outline. Margaret Jenelle-Hyde did an article in “Piecework” about the term Kensington being applied to several different stitches.

I was just trying to think of things that would bring up the mood. I was wondering how much time some of us find for stitching. I have a friend over in England who can stitch even the hardest MLI designs in what seems like no time to me. She asked me if I’d like to be in a group where we each stitch something, and then send it to another person in the group and they stitch some of it (is that what’s called a Round Robin?). I told her I stitch so much slower than she does, she’d be waiting on me forever!!! I think I manage about two hours a day during the week, and maybe three or four on the weekends. The rest of the time I do housework and think about stitching!

How to Make Appealing Cross Stitch Patterns?

I tend to stitch first thing in the morning while I’m still on that first cup of coffe. I also stich while watching/listening to the t.v. or am just plain bored with doing everything else I also tend to stitch in spurts. This latest spurt has lasted about 4 months. The longest I’ve gone without stitching anything is about a month. This usually happens when I’ve just completed a complicated piece, or can’t make up my mind what USO to do. Once I decide, I’m off and running (I mean stitching). Tied in with these 2 threads-If I’m in the middle of a spurt when I literally have to force myself not to stitch, I will use stitching time to reward myself for doing less pleasant tasks ( a variation of first we work, then we play, from my kids early school days).

I think the question would have to be: When don’t  you stitch? I stitch whenever I’m not on the computer, or doing housework (ha ;) or going for a bike ride with my daughter, or teaching a piano lesson. I used to stitch at work when no one was looking. I stitch whenever I can. I wish I could stitch in the car, but motion sickness prevails. I have been lurking for awhile and I finally decided to venture out by responding to this question. I like to do counted cross stitch at home while in the living room while the tv is going. It helps me not to snack after dinner which is an added bonus. Prior to the internet explosion I used to stitch at work. My favorite time to stitch though is on the train. I spend about an hour one way on the train so I can get a lot done.

I love watching peoples expression and actions when they see me stitching and the quality of work I do. Being a man and doing cross stitching does not fit the normal stereotype of a stitcher but when you add in the fact that I am 6’5″ and about 290 lbs it makes watching their reactions that much better. I started stitching more or less on a dare from some of the ladies that rode the train. Once I started I found out how much I love it. My latest completed project was a set of kitchen towels and pot holders for my wife. The pot holders were tough to do with the pocket on the pot holder and my frying pan sized hand trying to squeeze into it. I did a teddy bear sitting in a heart with a diagonal design with a heart in the center. Really looks nice.

Peyote Cross Stitch Information

I am going to add to Lori’s post as I have also made a number of these. I call them “pockets” and use them as such — (although I suppose traditional amulet bags tend to be on the smaller side.) I make both beaded and stitched pockets (in fact I have a pattern for using watercolors on congress cloth which I taught to our EGA chapter) . They vary from about an inch and a half by two inches on up to five inches and have a necklace so that they are worn around the neck.

I use mine for my lunch money at work (I work in a school) when I don’t have pockets in my clothes. My stitched ones don’t usually have a flap but most of my beaded ones do. They are usually decorated with beads and some sort of beaded fringe (even my stitched ones have beads dangling off them.) — I did one stitched on with feathers hanging off it! The one I’m wearing right now is made of Gick #11 seed beads with a diagonal roman stripe pattern and then has all sorts of interesting beads hanging along the sides (Cloisonne (sp?), turquoise heart, crystal beads, gold beads (not real unfortunately), a glass bead like a leaf, a little dark fetish).

The flap has a turquoise bear fetish. A large Cloisonne bead is hanging from the bottom which is pointed like a V in the middle. The necklace part is a double strand of seed beads that come together through larger fancy beads like are hung from the sides. I made it especially to go with one of my outfits. On the other hand, I make lots of peyote stitch and loomwork amulet bags! I have a free peyote stitch pattern graph up on my family’s web pages. (This is not a commercial site) Let me know what you think and if you need any help.

How to Make Bird Designs Using Cross Stitches?

There seems to be very little cross stitch from India/Pakistan, although I do have a few old, worn pieces in my collection – one is a purple satin sleeve decorated with a repeating pattern of cross stitch birds – all the stitches are spaced by eye as the fabric doesn’t have an even weave. I also have a door hanging and square ‘envelope’ bag with cross stitch on them – the stitching on the door hanging looks rather like Berlin Wool work as it’s worked on cream fabric – the patterns are of roses and other flowers worked in bright thread colors. Those pieces of embroidery in your collection sound lovely.

I collect little bits of ethnic textiles too when I can find and afford the prices!! I could kick myself now, because I saw a little child’s outfit in a local crafts shop in Mexico of all places that was from Rajasthan, India. It was fancily embroidered in metallic threads, bright silks or rayons and had little shisha mirrors and spangles for trim. The proprietor wanted $50 US for it. Now I’m going to look for a copy of your A Creative Guide to XS Embroidery book….I’m glad you mentioned it, otherwise we wouldn’t know.I don’t know of any cross-stitch patters from India. But, you can find cross-stitch in places like Afganisthan, Uzbek, and Thailand. I own a couple of Uzbeki pieces. The patterns are geometric and the colours bright.

Where you can get patterns, I don’t know. The Toronto Museaum for Textiles put out a publication called, _The Birth Symbol in Traditional Women’s Art from Eurasia and the Western Pacific_ and in it are a few cross stitch pieces. I don’t know if it’s still in print. Maybe they have other publications of the kinds of patterns you’re looking for. I also have a book that was put out by Anchor called _Anchor Indian Embroidery Motifs_ but these are crewel work. I got this in India more than 20 years ago, so I don’t know if it is available. I wouldn’t mind photoopying the book and sending snail mail.

Effective Tips for Cross Stitching

I looked in the FAQ’s to try to find how to do this stitch but couldn’t find it. Will someone please point me in the right direction or tell me how to do the stitch. I’m doing my first project on fabric other than aida & did not realize until tonite it called for some Symrana stitches. The smyrna stitch is a cross stitch with an addition vertical stitch on top over the center of the stitch. It ends up making a little *bump* because of the last top stitch. Hope this makes some sense. You might try looking at Eileen Bennet’s *Sampler Stitches* vol. 1&2, or even any stitch reference book.

This is a fairly standard stitch and I have never seen it called another name. There are a couple of books (your library might have them) that include some charts–I think the name of one is “Around the World with Cross Stitch” or something like that. You might also check back issues of Piecework magazine which often covers needlework from other countries. Most of these designs are repeating geometric designs in bright colors. I have travelled (a little) in India. Here in England we have a substantial community from the sub-continent; I know where to buy saris, Indian style jewellery, videos in Hindi etc. But no cross stitch.

I don’t think there is any ethnic cross stitch from those areas because other forms of embroidery are traditional, such as Shisha embroidery using mirrors, or Kantha embroidery. If you would like a little more information on these subjects they have been discussed on this news group fairly recently, so do a search on deja news which should turn up a couple of web sites to look at.
